The Shangri-Las Essentials

The Shangri-Las Essentials

In the '60s girl-group universe, The Shangri-Las were the misunderstood vixens whose mascara ran in rivulets from the tracks of their tears. Sure, they celebrated chopper-riding bad boys in doo-wop odes like “Leader of the Pack” and the dirge-like “Dressed in Black”, but that tough exterior concealed a crew of wounded romantics. Mary Weiss and her rebel-girl sisters rejoiced over crushes in exhilarating rave-ups like “The Dum Dum Ditty” and wallowed in the exquisite agony of teendom in laments like “I Can Never Go Home Anymore”. Like most outsiders, the Shangri-Las had the tenderest hearts of all.
