Public Enemy: Deep Cuts

Public Enemy: Deep Cuts

Everything Public Enemy touched turned righteous, but some of their social critiques were too raw for radio. “Pollywannacraka” pillories the racial dynamics that affect relationships, while Chuck D calls for revolution over the dissonant beat of “Rightstarter (Message To a Black Man)”. Less political is “Caught, Can We Get a Witness?”, which tackles the legalities of sampling while cheekily jacking the funky groove of an old Bobby Byrd song.
