Parcels Essentials

After toying with genres like metal, bluegrass and folk in their formative years, the members of Byron Bay’s Parcels came together in 2014 and have been crafting their own mix of funk, disco and electro-pop ever since. And though they later moved to Berlin, their harmony-laden songs have continued to evoke the warm sound of a coastal Australian summer. Their eye for detail recalls the studio perfectionism of ’70s AOR artists like Steely Dan or Supertramp, particularly on tracks such as the synth-heavy “Withorwithout”. Their first-ever show in France caught the attention of Daft Punk, who invited the band to collaborate. The fruit of that partnership, “Overnight”, has all the hallmarks of the Gallic house duo, with a tight groove, sparkling melody and choppy, golden-era disco guitar licks that could have come straight from Random Access Memories. Elsewhere, “IknowhowIfeel” shows off their affinity for hazy, shimmering yacht rock, while “Tieduprightnow” plays with twitchy Afrobeat and funk bass.
