Nicholas Britell Essentials

Since emerging in 2008 with the music for Natalie Portman’s film Eve, Nicholas Britell has become one of the most ubiquitous film and television composers. He’s distinguished himself with a multi-stylistic fluency, creating authentic early jazz in “No Two Words” from Whiplash, a mix of draggy hip-hop breaks and grandiloquent strings in the Succession theme, and a blend of funereal piano and Lucinda Williams’ raw blues singing on “I’m Crying” from Free State of Jones. Yet the heart of his work relies on orchestral writing, with motifs often tied to specific characters, using sound as a portal to their inner lives.
