Mental As Anything Essentials

Springing onto Sydney’s music scene with the jittery 1979 single “The Nips Are Getting Bigger”—a drinking song using Aussie slang for shots of alcohol—Mental As Anything spent the next few decades perfecting their twinkling, tuneful New Wave across various line-up changes. The quality tying together all those iterations has been a heartfelt quirkiness: It’s there in the romantic 1985 hit “Live It Up”, featured prominently in Crocodile Dundee, as well as in jaunty covers of ’60s gems by Roy Orbison, The Reflections and Unit 4 + 2. In recent years, the band was jointly fronted by two of its most fruitful songwriters: singer/guitarist Martin Plaza and singer/keyboardist Andrew “Greedy” Smith, who died in late 2019. Even as fashions changed during the ’90s and ’00s, the Mentals always maintained their youthful playfulness, as evidenced by album titles like Beetroot Stains.
