Junior Boys Essentials

Ontario, Canada's Junior Boys became the beneficiaries of early-'00s blog buzz by feeding ‘80s synth-pop romanticism through the fractured beatscapes of post-Y2K R&B and IDM. Their first recordings betray the duo's hermetic, studio-rat origins: On “Birthday”, Jeremy Greenspan's wounded croon fends off a glitchy rhythm track that seems to be poking at the bruises on his aching heart. But their sound soon turned bolder: “In the Morning” is a huffing and puffing hit of electro-funk, and “Banana Ripple” is a strobe-lit house workout that doesn't relent for nine ecstatic minutes.
