Jinjer Essentials

Since their formation in 2009, Ukraine’s Jinjer have been associated with an utterly unique take on progressive metalcore. It all starts with Tatiana Shmailyuk, whose deep voice incorporates not just elements of gothic metal but R&B and pop as well. She’s one of those rare vocalists who could tackle nearly any style and sound natural. The band follows Shmailyuk’s maverick lead, grafting the genre’s core elements, including plenty of strangled breakdowns and throaty howls, to an array of sonic left turns: djent-inspired riffs, slamming hip-hop beats and, as heard on 2019’s surprise-packed album Macro, the occasional reggae groove.
