Jessica Mauboy: Sydney WorldPride 2023

“I’m thrilled to share some of my favourite songs that celebrate community, pride and love,” Jessica Mauboy tells Apple Music. The singer of Kuku Yalanji and Timorese descent has long been a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community, and togetherness and understanding have been emotional hallmarks of her own musical output. “These songs carry a strong and important message of inclusion and embrace the true sentiment of a free spirit,” she says of her playlist picks. “Full of anthems and triumphant pop classics, this playlist includes some of the most iconic hits. Play them loud and proud!” Well said. Read on to feel the love—and the groove—of Jessica Mauboy’s go-to WorldPride essentials. Electric Fields, “2000 and Whatever” “I love them because for me they really represent pride, from where we have been in the past to the present. Their music embodies everything, and that’s why I’m so drawn to this song so much.” Olivia Newton-John, “Xanadu” “A total classic and so iconic. To me this song is about the impossible becoming a reality. It lyrically says a lot about today and where we are going as a community—an understanding and celebration of acceptance, learning acceptance, understanding that we’re all human. This song represents the feeling of having no fear, and doing the impossible.” Christine Anu, “Party” “This was one of the first songs that ever dared to share and represent an all-inclusive version of Indigenous people. It’s a celebration song for all, it’s everything about breaking the mould of expectation—who you are meant to be!” The artwork above was created in collaboration with Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta artist ENOKi.
