Isolation

Isolation

In his 2013 autobiography, the famously melancholic singer Morrissey recalls surveying a scene outside a show in Fresno, California: thousands of fans decked out in Morrissey and Smiths gear, prepared to worship at his feet—a picture to which Morrissey can only respond, “I do not know what to do with all of this happiness.” We get it: As pleasant as feeling good can be, there’s something just as rich about sadness—about exploring our blue moods and dark sides, maybe even embracing them. With that in mind, this playlist of indie and alternative—from post-punk through now—sets aside the highs in search of the lows. Our editors are always switching up selections, so if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
