Two things are immediately striking about Eugenio Finardi: his gruff, expressive baritone and keening melodic turns. Active in Italy’s music scene since the late 1960s, the Milan-born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist was among the first of the country’s rock artists whose tunes displayed strong political undertones, as detected among the driving rhythms of “Musica Ribelle” and “Extraterrestre”. In the decades since, Finardi has also showcased his softer side, with tender cuts such as “Vorrei svegliarti” and “Patrizia” that reveal the rich, full-bodied quality of his voice.
