Cat Power Essentials

Cat Power Essentials

Indie icon Chan Marshall began recording as Cat Power in 1995 and, from the very beginning, her abrasive, emotionally raw songs made her an underground sensation, earning her an early champion and mentor in Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley. But beginning with 1998's moody and atmospheric Moon Pix (recorded with members of post-rock band The Dirty Three), she began to expand her sound, which has taken the form of tough alt-rock (2002's Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder-assisted You Are Free), sweet Southern soul (2006's Memphis-bound The Greatest) and wistful dream pop (2012's Sun). Two decades on, Marshall remains one of indie rock's most enigmatic and unpredictable talents.
