About Hector Berlioz

Hector Berlioz was the archetypal French Romantic composer and conductor, known for his passionate emotions, intense literary inspirations, and proclivities for grandiose musical displays. Berlioz made his name in 1830 with the Symphonie fantastique, a five-movement work that was notable for its lurid storyline. Other important large-scale works were the mammoth opera Les Troyens, the dramatic oratorio La Damnation de Faust, the tone poem Harold en Italie, the dramatic symphony Roméo et Juliet, and the massive Requiem. Also known as a perceptive critic and writer, Berlioz was the author of Evenings with the Orchestra and the entertaining Memoirs.
