On the third full-length outing with his large ensemble Initiative H, French saxophonist and composer David Haudrechy stretches further beyond genre boundaries, exploring hybrid zones where chamber music, jazz harmony and dance beats coalesce. Broken Land combines the warm tonal colour of woodwinds and brass with edgy electric guitar and keyboards, foregrounding a live-band aesthetic while often touching on the alluringly machine-like qualities of electronic music. Peppered with jazz-rooted improvisation, the music retains a primal energy, with stark transitions, looped figures and patterns, restless grooves and a spacey, psychedelic feel.
