Cindy Blackman Santana: The Session Musicians

Cindy Blackman Santana: The Session Musicians

Long before entering the orbit of her husband, Carlos Santana, Cindy Blackman was a drumming star on the NYC jazz scene. Her forceful but nuanced playing on Wallace Roney’s 1988 neo-bop burner “Intuition” explains why. But she’s got funk and rock chops to burn, and she famously spent years working with Lenny Kravitz (check her authoritative groove on “Straight Cold Player”). And in her playing on a fiery version of the Santana classic “Oye Como Va” and on slamming solo tracks like “We Came to Play”, all her influences come together.
