About Submotion Orchestra
Seven-piece electronic/jazz ensemble Submotion Orchestra combined bass, soul, ambient electronica, jazz, and dub, complemented by Ruby Wood's sultry vocals. The project began when York Arts Council asked founding members Tommy Evans and Dom "Ruckspin" Howard to compose a piece to be performed at York Minster in 2009. Submotion Orchestra became revered for their energetic live shows on a local level, and they hit the festival trail, where the feel-good atmosphere they promoted made them a firm favorite. Finest Hour (2011) earned the long-term support of BBC Radio 6 DJ Gilles Peterson. After the release of Fragments (2012), the band signed with Ninja Tune offshoot Counter, which led to Alium (2014) and Colour Theory (2016). ~ Liam Martin
