Titus Andronicus Essentials

Ambitious storytelling and bracing spontaneity enjoy equal billing in the noisy, triumphant indie rock of Titus Andronicus. Formed in Glen Rock, New Jersey, in 2005 by sole constant member Patrick Stickles, the band broke through with 2010’s The Monitor, which took its name from a Civil War naval battle and mingled historic themes well beyond that. The seven-minute opener “A More Perfect Union” recounts searching for a “new” New Jersey before riffing on the title phrase of state icon Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run”. Emboldened from there, Stickles went full rock opera with 2015’s The Most Lamentable Tragedy, a five-act depiction of mental-health woes that foregrounds Stickles’ visceral lyrics and ragged vocal delivery. Living up to the many dramatic jolts of the Shakespearean tragedy that is the band’s namesake, Titus Andronicus has continued to document life’s toughest turns with a stubborn energy that makes perennial underdogs want to pump their fists.
