Playing his namesake instrument since the age of four, Timmy Trumpet, a.k.a. Timothy Smith, adds clever jazz and classical nuances to surging EDM anthems. His 2014 breakout “Freaks” paired peppy brass lines with New Zealand rapper Savage’s outsized delivery, while the Sydney producer/DJ slyly sampled Mary Jane Lamond’s Gaelic singing on 2016’s mesmerising “Oracle”. Smith may favour replayable earworms that rarely exceed the four-minute mark, but his symphony background is never far behind: 2022’s “Vivaldi” pays sweeping tribute to the late Italian composer of the same name, thanks in part to Mexican producer Mariana BO’s frenetic violin.
