The Fugs Essentials

The Fugs Essentials

Taking their name from Norman Mailer's substitute for that other F-word in The Naked and the Dead, The Fugs were the East Village's gleeful anarchists, a bunch of ex-Beats finding new artistic directions in the proto-hippie tumult. Formed by poet Tuli Kupferberg, underground publisher Ed Sanders and drummer Ken Weaver in '63, the group recorded a pair of scabrous indie LPs that mixed sex, drugs, politics and poetry in unexpected, bracing ways. Improbably, the group signed to Reprise Records in '67 and released four marginally more commercial albums before splitting in the early '70s.
