The Darkness Essentials

The Darkness are an unguilty pleasure: a gloriously cocky 2000s hard-rock band with a love of flash and pizzazz to rival role models Queen. Their million-selling 2003 debut album, Permission to Land, is stuffed with Thin Lizzy-style twin guitar solos (“Growing on Me”), riffs that demand their own wall of Marshall amps (“I Believe in a Thing Called Love”), and the shrieking falsetto of perpetually catsuited frontman Justin Hawkins. In true rock-legend style the band found success hard to navigate and split in 2006, citing rehab and personal issues, but reformed five years later and picked up exactly where they left off.
