Ted Egan Essentials

Veteran songwriter, filmmaker and author Ted Egan lives in Alice Springs in the centre of Australia, which is fitting because his contemporary folk strikes at the very heart of the outback experience, paying special attention to Indigenous issues. Witness “The Drover's Boy”, which recalls a time in the 1920s when a union between an Aboriginal woman and white man was forbidden, so Indigenous females had to bind their breasts and cut their hair to be passed off as shepherd boys. Egan also revels in the characters of the outback, with “Drinkers of the Territory”, a raucous tribute to the pub dwellers in the top end of Australia.
