“Black music could be hip-hop or R&B,” Syd says. “It could be funk or soul, it could be classical or country. It could be anything.” Syd would know: She began her career as a DJ and cofounding member of the Odd Future crew before becoming the frontwoman for acclaimed R&B project The Internet. Syd has been either studying or contributing to the legacy of Black music her entire life. And with her Black Music Month 2019 playlist, Syd's message reflects what the music has given her. “Black pride equals self-love,” she says.
