Selects: RP Boo

Considering that DJ/producer RP Boo (aka Kavain Wayne Space) is known for making some of dance music's most complicated, off-kilter tracks—the sort that have made him a legend in Chicago footwork circles—it may come as a surprise that the songs on his Selects playlist are of the groovier, more laidback variety. “These are just some songs I listened to growing up that I really enjoyed, and still play a part of keeping a smile on my heart,” he tells Apple Music. Like any great DJ (the “RP” stands for “record player”, after all), Boo keeps his crates deep, and his influences run in all sorts of unexpected directions, whether it’s Steely Dan's “Black Cow”, Van Halen's “Jump” or The Isley Brothers’ cover of Seals & Crofts’ soft-rock classic “Summer Breeze”. “It's just one of those songs that sounds so great and I love playing it—the guitar lick rocks so right,” he says. But vintage funk, soul, disco and R&B from the likes of James Brown, George Benson and Minnie Riperton also are well represented. Of First Choice’s exuberant "Dr. Love”, Boo says, “My uncle played it in his room while I was sitting with him and the freedom of dancing he let out was amazing—even I had to join him.” Hear all of his Selects, and if you like a track, add it to your library.
