Satyricon Essentials

Oslo's renowned black metal heroes Satyricon are not for the faint-hearted. They slather thick, chugging guitars with death-rattle screams and enough blast beats to make your ears bleed for weeks—but they've never been afraid to try out new things over their dozen-odd albums and EPs. Their 1994 debut Dark Medieval Times threw flute and acoustic guitars into the mix, while The Shadowthrone brought in male choirs and piano, unwittingly prepping the first black metal major label signees for their Norwegian National Opera collaboration some 10 years later. Raw power meets dark grace with these innovators.
