Nicholas Angelich Essentials

American pianist Nicholas Angelich burst into the limelight in the mid-’90s; fresh from extensive European training, he was seriously energetic, devouring Classical and Romantic repertoire. His technique was always exemplary, but over time he settled down, bringing a more contemplative flair to his interpretations. His nuanced reading of Bach's Goldberg Variations sidestepped glib virtuosity in favour of a refined, airy take that allowed the glorious counterpoint to open up like a bottle of wine. On the other hand, his 2016 recording of Liszt's Piano Sonata in B Minor proved that he could summon dazzling energy and drive when necessary. He was as passionate about Brahms, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff and also celebrated contemporary composers in his performances. Angelich died 18 April 2022, aged 51.
