Gospel may not be Michael W. Smith’s primary focus, but like an old friend, it’s a sound he revisits time and time again. In addition to penning songs for other vocalists, Smith has tried his hand at both punchy urban gospel and traditional hymns dripping with stately reverence. He’s also undertaken some audacious experiments, including a spiritually enriched “Bridge Over Troubled Water” built from chiming gospel keys and glorious orchestration.
