Laurel Halo is more than just an electronic musician. Michigan-born Laurel Anne Chartow honed her DJ’ing skills at the same time that she worked on free jazz compositions and the convergence of these disparate forms is apparent in her work. On “Chapter 4”, she marries jazz chords with laid-back beats to hypnotising effect, while “Jelly” features gentle yet slippery vocals from South Londoner Klein. But Laurel Halo isn’t afraid to throw down a beat—on the propulsive and aptly titled “Throw”, riffs crescendo then give way to pummelling drums.
