French-Algerian singer-songwriter Hamid “Idir” Cheriet is a global treasure. He had an ability to deliver inventive originals and was a relentless champion of North Africa, the Algerian diaspora, Imazighen culture and the Kabyle language. His songs include breakout worldwide hit “A Vava Inouva”, a delicate, fairytale-themed lullaby that established him as an emerging voice; as well as late-career highlights like the spoken-word “Lettre à ma fille”, which captures a father’s internal turmoil in a letter to his daughter. Even in death, Idir’s music continues to touch lives.
