Andrew Hozier-Byrne's songs draw much of their elemental power from the spiritual heat of gospel music. He conjures dark spirits on bruising and dramatic rock numbers that are sung with total abandon in a high, keening wail, most notably on his 2013 breakthrough hit “Take Me to Church”. And while he's an astute lyricist (“To Be Alone”), it's the power of his soul that produces a sense of romantic drama on “From Eden”, gives monolithic weight to the folky lament “Like Real People Do”, and summons world-crushing passion on “Nina Cried Power”.
