Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem is a modern musician with a strong sense of tradition, always referencing Arab music while taking note of the changing world around him, variously working with players from his region, with western improvisers and, in the case of “Souvenance” (inspired by the 'Arab Spring' and its aftermath), a string orchestra. “Blue Maqams” is the album which brings him closest to jazz, with a stellar line-up featuring Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette and Django Bates.
