Chimurenga Essentials

Chimurenga Essentials

From the 1960s up to today, the fight for social justice in Zimbabwe has been empowered by Chimurenga artists. The style has roots in the rippling, entwined melodies of traditional mbira compositions of the Shona people. Chimurenga artists modernize the sound with electric guitar and elements of rock, blues, jazz and reggae, and African styles like jit and mbaqanga. The dynamic, propulsive compositions are fuelled by powerful lyrics invoking the struggle for human rights. The style has shifted and grown over the years, but its central role in the struggle for equal rights remains true.
