Taking their name from an Old Testament demon associated with orgies and worshipped in phallus form, Belphegor unsurprisingly deal in both Satanism and sex. Founded by guitarist/vocalist Helmuth Lehner in the early ‘90s, the Austrian band always marry the darkest of sounds—whether writing in German, English or Latin. Thudding blast-beat workouts like “Baphomet” and “Gasmask Terror” showcase their death-metal side, while tracks like “Lucifer Incestus” and “Blood Magick Necromance” writhe in a grim black-metal atmosphere. Elsewhere, “Sexdictator Lucifer” and “Bondage Goat Zombie” combine all their proclivities—musical and otherwise.
