About Sujatha

With a multi-decade career and many thousands of songs to her name, Sujatha Mohan is one of playback singing’s leading voices. • Mohan’s musical career began early, as she made her playback debut at the age of 12 with “Kannezhuthi” for the 1975 Malayalam film Tourist Bungalow. • Her youthful talent earned her the nickname Baby Sujatha, and she was soon taken under the wing of playback legend K. J. Yesudas. • As well as enjoying a short stint singing ad jingles, the young artist began to collaborate with revered film composers such as Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman. • Her first release in Tamil was “Kaalai Paniyil”, featured in the 1977 film Gayathri. But it was the multisensory and reverb-heavy “Pudhu Vellai Mazhai” with Rahman on 1992 film Roja that would make the biggest mark and become a national hit. • Across her career, Mohan has also sung in Malayalam (“Kunu Kune”), Hindi (“Dil Hai Sanam Dil”), Telegu (“Krishna Veni”) and many other regional languages. • She is also a celebrity judge on the TV talent show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Keralam, highlighting her status as a seasoned professional and artistic authority. • Her daughter, Shweta Mohan, has followed in her mother’s footsteps and is already an established playback talent.
