About Andra Day

Discovered by Stevie Wonder, R&B singer and actress Andra Day brings a retro sensibility to songs that feel distinctly modern. • Day began singing as a kid at First United Methodist Church in Chula Vista, California. As a preteen, she discovered classic jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. • She worked more than 20 jobs after high school and was discovered by Stevie Wonder’s then-wife, Kai Millard. Wonder himself called Day on the phone and eventually introduced her to Adrian Gurvitz, who would produce much of her first album. • After building buzz with a series of covers and mashups posted on social media, Day earned a deal with Warner Bros. • Her 2015 debut album, Cheers to the Fall, earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. The song “Rise Up” brought a second Grammy nomination, for Best R&B Performance. • Day teamed up with rapper Common for “Stand Up for Something”, off the soundtrack for the 2017 film Marshall. The song earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. • In 2021, Day won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her portrayal of the title character in The United States vs. Billie Holiday. She also earned a Best Original Song nomination for “Tigress and Tweed”, written with Raphael Saadiq.
