About Amaal Nuux

Amaal creates mellifluous R&B that covers the breadth of the human experience. Born in 1990 in Mogadishu, Somalia, the singer’s family fled the country in the wake of a civil war when Amaal was a baby. After resettling in Toronto, Amaal found her voice as a musician, drawing inspiration from soul legends like Sam Cooke and contemporary R&B greats like Alicia Keys. Raised in a conservative household, Amaal released early work, including her empowering 2016 single “Last Ones”, that was motivated by her experiences in her home country. She eventually made the intentional decision to transition from covering politically aware and socially conscious issues, instead choosing to delve into topics of intimacy, self-love and romance. The result was Amaal’s intensely vulnerable debut EP, 2019’s Black Dove, highlighted by the reflective, undulating single “Not What I Thought”. In 2021, Amaal released her follow-up album, Milly, which saw the singer continuing to explore her uninhibited relationship with sensuality, as evidenced by the carnal “Honey”.
