Teaming with bassist Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland for Tripwire, UK-born alto saxophonist Will Vinson offers another variant of the trio concept he explored so fortuitously on his “dream trios” project Four Forty One, not to mention his Trio Grande with Gilad Hekselman and Antonio Sanchez, or his OWL trio with Lage Lund and Orlando le Fleming. For the most part, the horn-bass-drums instrumentation of Tripwire evokes a sparser, more classic jazz sound befitting ballads such as “Blue and Sentimental” and “For All We Know”. On the original “Fable”, however, Vinson lays down electric piano chords and overdubs saxes with fuzztone in increasingly edgy flavours. Two tracks feature the brilliant tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, whose interactive frisson with the leader is more collaborative than competitive.
