Vasily Petrenko Essentials

Russian-born Vasily Petrenko has helped usher orchestral music into the 21st century, parlaying a 2004 guest appearance with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic at the age of 28 into the role of principal conductor. The orchestra thrived under his revitalising influence, and from 2013-2020 he also led the Oslo Philharmonic as chief conductor. While his repertoire is vast, Petrenko has been celebrated for his handling of Russian music, particularly his inviting survey of Shostakovich's symphonies with the RLPO. His deft touch can also be seen in the balance of airiness and heft in his interpretation of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
