In the mid-‘60s, The Bobby Fuller Four carried the torch of old-school rock ‘n' roll forward, with a sound that echoed fellow Texans Buddy Holly & The Crickets. Their biggest songs were, in fact, written by Crickets guitarist Sonny Curtis. Fuller was steeped in first-generation R&B and rock ‘n' roll, but his guitar work also bore a surf-rock influence and just a touch of Texas twang, while his voice could be pop-star smooth or summon up a raw rocker's growl. Though he died in his early 20s just as his career was taking off, those clean, crisp riffs and irrepressible rhythms will last forever.
