Just as the U.S. has its Bob Dylan and Brazil its Caetano Veloso, Cuba has Silvio Rodríguez, a pioneering folk musician who mixes complex imagery, revolutionary ideals and indelible melodies. Since the late ‘60s, he has delivered penetratingly poetic lyrics in fluid, gentle tones atop deftly fingerpicked acoustic guitar patterns, occasionally branching out to a keyboard-based or percussion-bolstered sound. But he always returns to his lone-troubadour approach and the tender, passionate ballads that have made his name.
