There’s a lot about Shakey Graves’ rootsy style that suggests he’s a ghost from a bygone era, back when country singers ruled honky-tonks and blues musicians rocked juke joints. Equally true, however, is the fact that the artist behind the persona, Texas-born Alejandro Rose-Garcia, is a restless soul. The 2014 hit “Dearly Departed”—modern Americana catchy enough for the pop charts—proved to be a big break from the raw, one-man-band sound he had introduced in the early 2000s. Even bolder is 2018’s Can’t Wake Up, an album that sees Shakey Graves morph into a rock group exploring what can only be described as cosmic heartland music.
