Scott Walker Essentials

As the almost baritone-voiced lead singer of '60s British teen idols The Walker Brothers (who were neither British nor Walkers nor brothers), Scott Walker transformed otherwise harmless pop songs like "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" into dark existential epiphanies. He produced albums full of effortlessly cool, orchestrally rich art music like "Plastic Palace People" as an increasingly uncommercial solo artist during the '70s and went on to develop a sprawling and experimental minimalism in electronically augmented tracks like "Jesse" from 2006's The Drift. While Walker passed away in 2019, his influence is felt all across the spectrum—whether in boundary-pushing pop from David Bowie, Pulp and Animal Collective or in compositional innovations from Brian Eno and Sunn O))).
