Mano Negra Essentials

Mano Negra Essentials

Singer Manu Chao, his brother Antoine and their bandmates distil a world's worth of music into this wildly eclectic combo formed in Paris in 1987. Mano Negra (meaning "black hand") mashed together flamenco, ska, Tex-Mex, salsa, and rai with Clash-y rebel rock and motor-mouthing dancehall reggae. They deemed their mestizo mixture "patchanka," a percussively frantic, adventurous, and rudely jubilant blend topped off by Chao's alternately innocent and insolent vocals.
