Lena Horne Essentials

Lena Horne joined the chorus at Harlem's Cotton Club in 1933 when she was just 16. Within a few years, she had released her debut with the bandleader Noble Sissle on Decca Records and was appearing in motion pictures. During the Red Scare of the ‘50s, Horne was persecuted for her liberal politics and blacklisted by Hollywood, so she returned to the nightclub scene and became a regular fixture on TV. Remembered as much for her convictions as her songs, Horne refused to perform for segregated audiences during her WWII shows for the U.S. army and marched on Washington for Civil Rights in 1963.
