In assembling the sounds of Tropicália, Gilberto Gil looked far, wide and within. His music found its dimensions with infusions of regional samba and bossa nova (João Gilberto, Antônio Carlos Jobim); the jaunty Afrobeats and skanky reggae that drive his rebellious riddims (Fela Kuti, The Wailers); and a bluesy, kaleidoscopic lens that informs his psych rock (Hendrix, The Beatles).
