There are hints of his iconic phrasing, but nothing like what Greenwich Village hipsters heard in 1964 on tracks like “Itt” from New York Eye & Ear Control, in which Ayler's work reached new improvisatory heights alongside bassist Gary Peacock and trumpeter Don Cherry.
