Tribe created a genuine hip-hop movement by mashing together post-bop horns, rolling basslines and hard boom-bap beats, and topping them off with Q-Tip's fluid, freeform rhymes that played an alto sax to the gruff, declarative blurts of Phife's deceptively straightforward lyrics. But Tribe were more than just a sound. They were a cultural movement, weaving themes of black empowerment with references to ‘70s cartoon characters to make “important music” that didn't always take itself seriously.
