About Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra
Arising from the ashes of postwar Germany, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra quickly set the precedent for chamber orchestras following historical performance practices. Not constrained to the music of any one era, however, the orchestra's repertoire stretches from the Baroque to newly commissioned works. The group was founded by Karl Münchinger in 1945. The orchestra earned distinction for its approach to performing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, departing from performance practices that had become standard during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Under principal conductor Thomas Zehetmair and artistic partner Jörg Widmann, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra has continued to grow its prolific recording catalog, appearing on cellist Lionel Martin's recording of John Tavener's The Protecting Veil in 2023, conducted by Corinna Niemeyer.
