A jazz, boogie-woogie, jump blues pianist, and bandleader, Sam (Sammy) Price was born Samuel Blythe Price in Honey Grove, Texas on October 6, 1908. Early in his performing career he worked as a singer and dancer in various Dallas club venues, but his fine and flexible piano playing soon opened other doors for him. In 1938 he was hired as a piano session man by Decca Records and he worked with singers like Trixie Smith and Sister Rosetta Tharpe during his stay there, as well as tracking sides for the label with his own band, the Texas Bluesicians, which included Don Stovall and Emmett Berry. He also had a decade-long musical association with Henry "Red" Allen. Later in life he excelled as a nightclub entertainer at venues in the New York and Boston areas, and remained active as a musician until his death in Harlem on April 14, 1992 at the age of 83. ~ Steve Leggett
