Floa

Floa

Even jazz skeptics will be disarmed by the British trio’s metamorphic instrumentals. Released on forward-thinking Manchester jazz label Gondwana, and produced by Matthew Halsall—Britain’s maestro of modern spiritual jazz—Floa is a slowly evolving storm system of cyclical rhythm. Building on the looping, densely patterned interplay between piano, horn, and drums, “Shift” and “Hourglass” gradually absorb the shadowed, velvety moans of a small string ensemble. Meanwhile, “In the Treetops” patiently transforms an understated R&B pattern into a sombre chant for an ecosystem in flux.
