Afro Soultet’s psych-tinged late-’60s instrumental album Afrodesia is a riveting slice of Afro-jazz cool in which melodic and rhythmic patterns shift and morph excitingly throughout. Staying true to retro-soul, the Texas-born ensemble get hip on the lounge banger “Slave Traders”; “Afro Revolt” is a swanky, sweltering number with sultry brass melodies that seem to strut as they swirl against a shimmery, purring-cymbal backdrop. At times, “Drumbouie” is percussively raucous and, at others, utterly serene—a one-song showcase for their moody versatility.
