A classically-trained musician who studied with 20th century avant-garde composers Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen, arranger and composer Rogério Duprat is a comparatively under-appreciated figurehead of the Tropicália movement. Released in 1968, this album mixes original songs by Duprat’s fellow Tropicália masters Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil with Brazilian-style reworkings of then-current American pop hits like John Fred’s “Judy in Disguise” and The Cowsills’ “The Rain, the Park and Other Things”. Several artists who appear on the contemporaneous Duprat-arranged classic Tropicalia: Ou Panis et Circencis also contribute here, including Tom Zé, Os Mutantes and Nara Leão.
